The sensitivity, like other activities is possessed in a varying degree, some people are very sensitive, others less so. However about 85% of people can use right angled rods, easily made from, for instance, metal coat hangers. For a forked rod to work the hands or wrists must turn outwards or inwards together. If one turns in and the other out the pressure on the rod is negatived and no movement takes place. This is a function of the polarity of our bodies, and only some 15% of us can work with forked rods.
Independent right angled rods are accurate indicators but lack the thrill of feeling the rod come alive in ones hands and so a sense of contact with a natural force.
When approaching a target using a forked rod the dowser can feel a growing tension apparently in the rod itself, but actually due to an alteration in the tension of his/her own muscles. This change of tension will help to sniff out the target, just as a dog or cat uses its nose. It is a thrilling sensation.
Dowsing has had a bad name. The Jesuits asserted that the Devil turned the stick, and imprisoned all caught practising the art. The 19th century French scientist, Chevreul, said that there was no known force in nature that could turn the dowsers stick. He did not understand that the force came from the dowser.
The Russians dowse for oil, we for water in these power hungry droughty times perhaps dowsing will come into its own.
