The University of the Third Age (U3A)
By Bob Boyd (Bromley U3A)
If you have retired, you may not have heard about the “University of the Third Age”. The idea of education after retirement first started in France in 1972. By 1982 it has spread to several other countries, including UK under the title “University of the Third Age”. The first group was formed in Cambridge, and since then has been growing in popularity around the country. Don’t let the name “University” put you off as no qualifications are required and none are given. The name “University”, in its true sense, is a community, or organisation, for teaching and learning. The Third Age being the age of retirement.
Perhaps there is a subject, or a hobby, that you have always wanted to take up? or a leisure facility which will keep you fit, now that you have more spare time?
Each U3A branch arranges its own programme of study courses and recreational activities. Membership numbers can range from just a few dozen to over one thousand. My own local branch in Bromley, Kent was formed 15 years ago and we now have over 1,500 members, with 90 different subjects to choose from - everything from Computing to Creative Writing and Keep Fit to Folk Dancing. Each group is formed as an independent self-help organisation of people who enjoy learning for pleasure. Members are encouraged to make a contribution in keeping with their skills, abilities and knowledge. One does not have to be an expert, or even a teacher, but enthusiasm for learning and taking part is the most important ingredient.
Here in Bromley, as well as retired couples, we have many single ladies and gentlemen. The social side of getting together is just as important and new friendships
are quickly made.
At present there are over 500 independent U3A’s which form the Third Age Trust in the UK. Many of these have now become non profit making Registered Charities. Membership fees are usually quite moderate and cover the cost of newsletters and the hiring of halls etc.
